What was Bob Dylan thinking when he wrote the song "The Times They Are A-Changing"?
What was Sam Cooke thinking about when he wrote "A Change Is Gonna Come"?
These are just a few of the questions we will consider in a Socratic discussion of the intersection of history and music during a one week in person summer camp.
The Soundtrack of History was founded by a group of music lovers and passionate historians who wanted to provide a exciting space for teens to explore the stories and cultural environments that inspired musicians to create compositions that help define key moments in our history.
This camp will be free to those students willing to take a deep dive into musical history.
At The Soundtrack of History, we believe in the power of music to bring people together, inspire creativity, and promote positive change. We are committed to creating a safe and inclusive space for our community to connect and share their love of music.

Each day, students will travel through a different era using our custom-built interactive timeline, discovering not just what happened in music history, but why it mattered.
We'll start each morning by "landing" in a specific decade on our timeline. Students will see the major historical events of that era—civil rights movements, wars, technological breakthroughs, cultural shifts—displayed alongside the music that emerged during those moments.
But here's where it gets exciting: instead of just reading about it, students will investigate the connection. Why did protest songs surge in the 1960s? How did the fall of the Berlin Wall influence music in the early 90s? What made grunge capture the mood of Generation X?
Students will click through the timeline to explore:
Then comes the real magic—students make the connections themselves. They'll discuss, debate, and discover how a song like "Blowin' in the Wind" wasn't just music—it was the voice of a generation demanding change. How "Smells Like Teen Spirit" captured teenage angst and rebellion in a way that still resonates today.
As the week progresses, students don't just consume the timeline—they help create it. They research musicians and songs they believe captured a moment, present their case to the group, and vote on additions. The timeline becomes their interpretation of music history, making the learning personal and memorable.
By week's end, students won't just remember dates and song titles. They'll understand that music is a living record of humanity—our hopes, struggles, celebrations, and changes. They'll hear songs on the radio and think, "I know the story behind that." That's the journey we're taking them on.
